Three Ways To Get Your Own Website

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

There are several incentives to have your own website these days. Maybe you’re intentions are to promote your services or expand your business to reach a worldwide client base. Maybe you want to showcase your art, literature, photography, or other work. Or maybe you’re drawn by the thought of generating quick profit with a website through advertising and internet marketing strategies. Whatever your personal incentive may be, one question remains consistent: how should you approach the task of getting your own website? The answer to this will vary for everyone. We’ll look at your options and the questions you should ask yourself to make the best decision for your specific website needs.

Your Options

There are three optional routes you can take to having your own website. The first of these is very time-consuming, it is to learn how to build and maintain your website on your own. This route is ideal for anyone drawn to the idea of eventually starting your own web development business or possibly building websites as a freelancer. The only problem is it could take years to develop these skills.

The second route available, a much shorter process, is to use a web design/development company’s services. This will allow you unlimited web functionalities and advanced design just the way you want it. Your website could be created and launched in just a matter of months. The downside here would be the price, which would rise with your website needs and can often range from $500 to $6,000+. If you’d like to have a better idea of what kind of costs you would be looking at for your specific needs, you can request a free quote from several web design/development companies.

The third and final optional route, the quickest and cheapest, is to use an “easy as 1-2-3” website builder. The expense for this type of service may be as little as five dollars a month. The way this “1-2-3″ procedure works is, to start with, you’ll need to choose a professionally designed website template. Next, you customize it using your text and graphics, and logo, if you have one. Lastly, you publish it, and there it is–your own website and in only a matter of minutes. However, as with anything, there is always a disadvantage–this option is limited on both advanced web functionality and design.

Which Option is For You?

Since you now know what your options are, there are a few questions you’ll need to ask yourself to help you determine which of them is the best for you.

You should be aware of your budget and ask yourself what amount of money you are aiming to spend and accordingly, what range of creative control on your website design you would be able to yield in exchange for saving time and money.

If you have a limited budget, you may want to use the easy and economical “1-2-3″ website builder approach. Nevertheless, if you are not willing to negotiate absolute design control, the only option you are left with is to take the time to hunt down the better deal with different web design/development companies.

You will need to ask yourself what kind of functionality you need your website to have. For example, will you be needing blogging or other capabilities or perhaps need to sell your products and services? Again, if you do not have much financial constraint, your best option would be to go with a web/design development company. However, if you are interested in saving money, you can first determine whether or not a “1-2-3” website builder can fulfill your web needs. These days, it is even possible to create and run an online store with a basic website builder. Keep in mind that it is best to read up on the features of a website builder before making assumptions about it’s limitations.

As with anything, you always have the option to learn how to make a website on your own. If you are willing to put in the work to achieve this, the benefits will prove to be worthwhile. Attaining these skills can enable you evolve into a freelance web developer, get hired with a web design/development company, give you that technical edge that numerous companies are looking for in a potential employee, make money with advertising on your websites, and more.

Whether you want to learn fresh skills, give your business a web presence to hike up sales, or just have the power to post your content, having a website can open up many opportunities for your undertaking. Take the time to examine your needs and choose the best approach to serve your website purpose.

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

Domain name registration over a decade ago was a more specialized business with very few offering you the ability to purchase and register your own domain name. Since then, the domain name industry has blossomed and currently their is in existence of hundreds to thousands of service providers offering the chance to pick up and register your own domain name. The one domain name extensions almost everyone will pick up first if given the option is the .com extension which is what every web surfer will naturally type in first when getting on the web.

Do TLD domain name extensions exist that are specific for different countries? Yes they exist and you can purchase everything from .co.uk for United Kingdom (UK) based companies, to even .us domain names for United States companies. Also available for the Canadians just north of the states is their own .ca domain name extension. The .ca domain extensions is simply for all who want to register their site for a canadian domain name.

The controlling company for canadian domain names (.ca) is CIRA. This simply stands for the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. They control and monitor all activity with .ca domain names and if you choose to register a domain canada, an email will be sent to the administrative contact email indicating the registration process has been completed and you own the domain name.

Do you need to register the domain name through a company that is specifically located in Canada or will any cheap domain name registrar work? The answer to this is that any registrar will work provided that you find on their website that they actually offer ca domain names. Not every registrar currently offers the ability to register canadian domain names, but many do. One thing you will want to ensure when proceeeding with the domain registration is that the currency they are showing you is in canadian or us dollars. With the rate the conversion is at today, you will be paying more than the posted rate if it is in US Currency.

Paid Surveys that Really Pay

Posted by admin on June 25th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

Paid surveys sound like a terrific way to make money.  I know people who can’t wait for a survey phone call, so they can have their opinion count.  And they’re doing it for free!  Isn’t it great when you get to have a voice and get paid for a survey?

There are plenty of well thought of survey companies on the Internet; you just need to know where to look.  If it seems “too good to be true” it probably is.

Anyone that tells you that you’ll get rich making money doing online surveys is not being honest.  The truth is that you can supplement your income with paid surveys.  On average, most people make an extra $200 per month on paid surveys.  Most surveys offer compensation between $2-$10 dollars for ten minutes of your time. Of course, there is the occasional survey that pays up to $25 for a half hour of your time.

There really is no way to predict the amount of money you’ll make each month.  It depends on the time you put into it, and how many paid surveys are available to someone of your demographic that month.

Speaking of demographics, don’t be surprised if you have to answer some personal questions including age, sex, race, and geographic location.  All these factors are pieces of information that help companies market their product better.  Paid surveys are created so that companies can enhance their product, service, and marketing.

On the same note, anyone is eligible to take a paid survey.  Generally, you must be over 18 years old, but there are some surveys that ask for a teenager’s perspective.  If you decide to sign up on a paid survey website, setting up a PayPal account is a good idea.  This way, you’ll get all your money as soon as possible.

Bryan Ellis on the Explosion In Virtual Real Estate Investing

Posted by admin on June 15th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

Bryan Ellis Reviews

Bryan Ellis is widely recognized as a expert in the fields of real estate investing and internet marketing, so it’s no wonder he’s regarded as a founding thinker of the new phenomenon of Virtual Real Estate Investing. I recently spoke with him about this topic:

Landlords, rehabbers and foreclosure investors, take notice - you may soon be focused on the new concepts of Virtual Real Estate Investing. Everything from using the internet as an avenue to make more money in real estate to online games such as SecondLife seem to be included in the popular definition of this term. And the pure financial potential is staggering.

In order to figure out the truth of the matter, I sought out Bryan Ellis whose experience in the fledgling industry is truly impressive.

“I began using the term ‘virtual real estate investing’ in the late 1990’s when I realized the clear similiarities in profit strategies, regardless of whether the real estate in question is ‘virtual’ or ‘physical’” said Ellis.

One example of the parallels between virtual and physical real estate Bryan Ellis cites is the similarity between the monetization of domain names versus physical property. He points out that control of a domain name or even a specific web page is much like controlling a real estate property: “those assets can be monetized in similar ways: By selling them for a profit, by leasing them, by offering advertising, etc. It’s not even necessary to own a website in order to profit from it.”

Bryan Ellis points to the example of websites like HubPages, Squidoo, Google Knol, etc. “Each of these services allows any person to write an article or create other type of content, and then allows the author to share in the revenue generated on that page. It’s almost as if you’re renting retail space in a highly desirable shopping district, only you get the benefit of a ‘great address’ in the form of a well-known domain host like Google.com but without paying a single penny in rental fees. It’s a win-win scenario.”

I must admit: Its easy to see the parallels. For example, if you’re the owner of a desirable property, its desirability is (in a business context) largely due to its being in a location that is of interest to others. Similarly, ownership of a desirable domain name is valuable for the same reasons. Regardless of the type of asset, you can sell or lease or use any number of strategies to turn the assets into cash.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing, Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

Choosing a Domain Name

Posted by admin on June 14th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

There are so many things to consider when choosing that very important domain name. Put a lot of thought into it. It should be something that not only is about your business, but it should catch someones eye.

One very important thing to remember when choosing your domain names, is to be sure that it is easy to spell so that the ones whose eye it catches will not forget it before they get home to look it up. It will take a lot of thought and creativity on your part, but if you do it right you will have a name that everyone will recognize. It will help your business ten fold! If your business name is not available with a .com after it, there are several other extensions to choose from.

It is good that you choose a name that will be able to be found when googled by a person. You want to be at the top of the web hosting list! You want to be within the first five websites when your line of work is googled. You should also have extensions to your website. This will help you have more visitors to your site as well. You should also make sure that your email address is fairly similar to your website name. You may have more people contact you this way.

Your choosing in domain names can make or break your “online” part of your business. There is also free domains. Keywords used in your domain name will be the successful point when people are using a search engine to find what they are looking for. If you integrate most looked after parts of your business in your name people will see your website first.

It may all sound a bit confusing, but just remember one thing. Big businesses have got that way because they have put a lot of thought into their advertising portion of their business. I am sure it took many many tries for a domain name before they actually went with the one that sounded the most ear catching.

If you have a fairly common business you should really think hard and fast. If you know what you want your domain name to be you should purchase it before someone else does. After all you are only allowed to use domain names once. Get yours before it is gone.

Using Subdomains Pros and Cons

Posted by admin on June 13th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

Most businesses don’t like to use subdomains because they feel like they give them a disadvantage in many areas, such as having a prefix name before your web-site, being ignored by bots and index spiders in search engines and all in all, it just doesn’t look right. So let's check our facts on subdomains.

A subdomain is substitute or second-level of a domain. A regular domain looks as follows: www.jamesbrown.com . A sub domain looks like this

bravenet.jamesbrown.com. Subdomains do not have www on the front of them. All subs start with “http://subdomain/maindomain.com pattern of identification.

Subdomains rank efficiently well. Search engine spiders and bots are not prejudiced when it comes to the ranking of subdomains and regular domains. As long as your site has the right SEO keywords and has been optimized, whether you have a subdomain or regular domain name doesn’t make a difference at all.

Let's pretend that you site has a lot of categories in it. If you were to submit to a search engine, you could submit each subdomain as its own individual category and still get a good ranking.  Each subdomain would be looked at by search engines as a new site with its own index or home page. You may want to try creating subfolders on the subdomain to get around this so that search engines can read the folder as one set of site information.

People worry about their subdomain getting banned if the main domain name is banned. If the main domain is banned, it will have an effect on the subdomain. You see this happen often in adult content sites that have violated certain agreements that they have signed with a provider that does not want a domain used for adult material.

Again, there is nothing wrong with using a subdomain. If you want to develop each subdomain as its own entity, then by all means, do so.  If not, get yourself a main domain name and use that as a certified landing page.

How To Pick The Right Web Names

Posted by admin on June 12th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

After you have decided to build your website, one of the first things that you need to do is choose your web name. Your domain name is important as it will be what your visitors use to remember your website,

Is it related to your product or company?

You want to make sure that you pick a domain and web name that refelcts your product and your company. After all, nowadays your website is a key component of your identity and branding.

For maximum Search Engine Optimization, you will also want to include your most important keyword terms or phrases in your domain name. At this point you should have a list of keyword terms and phrases that match your search engine keyword competition requirements. Now you can start matching together that list of keyword terms and phrases to find your ideal domain name.

With our bulk domain checker you can enter a number of domain combinations at once and help you speed up the processes of finding the right domain name for you.

Is it easy to remember?

A key element of your domain web name is to make sure that it is easy to remember. Websites with long domain names, or strange charcters like ?<>*_-&^ are tough to remember and even tougher to explain to someone over the phone! Don’t make your website name too confusing or too long - you want your website to be as easily accesible as possible. Make sure it is easy to remember, easy to type, and easy to explain to someone over the phone. Websites names that rhyme or have their own rhythm are even better.

Is it unique?

You don’t want your website cofused with another website with a similar spelling or else you will likely miss out on website traffic. I recommend you stay away from plural, misspelled or hyphenated name of a similar domain.

Is it a “.com”?

Lastly, having a “.com” website name does matter and is important. “.com” domains have become the default for all of us, and are a key part of your website branding, name recognition and long-term success.

All About Domain Names

Posted by admin on June 11th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

Domain Names

Domain names are a key component to a web presence. Domains convert the numerical format that computers use to identify a website into a text based name that is easy for human users to understand and recall.

This section of our site, contains a large number of domain names related articles, covering many different aspects of selecting and using a domain name.

The domain registration market is now very competitive with many thousands of services operating around the world. As the competition is big enough in the market you can find many domain names coupon codes. I will recommend to take a look at Godaddy and try to find Godaddy coupons there are thousands of sites that offer that kind of coupons, my favorite is Coupon Codes Mall.

Domain names now have many forms known as Top Level Domain Types or TLD’s. The advantageously known Top Level Domain remains .com but regional names are a rapidly growing area such as .co.uk’s

Discount Domains is a leading UK domain name registration service and offers web hosting and web design services as well as domains.

If you need help or advice with your domain name selection or even have a domain article you think we would like to puplish, please get in touch.

There is no secret that a domain name plays a critical role in a company’s overall brand strategy. But what role does a domain name play when building the most important brand you have control over, your own personal brand? This valuable, but less implemented, brand strategy is arguably one of the best investments that many individuals have yet to take full advantage of in today’s wired world.

One of the most effective ways to build personal brand is through a domain name. To show what I mean, let’s look at Michael Simmons of SuccessManifesto.com, a successful entrepreneur who is using a domain names to build his personal brand while also helping bring attention to his new book The Student Success Manifesto, The Guide to Creating a life of Passion, Purpose and Prosperity.

At the age of 21, Michael is a student at the Stern School of Business at New York University, a writer, and an award-winning entrepreneur. Michael has written popular articles on entrepreneurship that have been published by Entrepreneur.com, College Bound Magazines, and Whizteens in Business. He has a unique perspective on the importance of personal brand and how it plays a role in helping people achieve their goals.

According to Michael’s book, knowing how to brand yourself is critical. In the same way that companies have a brand, individuals have one. By becoming aware that you are a brand, you too can leverage it to achieve your goals and plans. In The Student Success Manifesto, personal brand is composed of three parts. I have listed the three parts below, but for the purpose of this article I have changed the meanings to better relate them to domain names:

1: Communication - The overall message a domain name says about you 2: Credentials - The phrasing in the domain name that communicates experience 3: Reputation -The phrasing in the domain name that communicates trust

In order to have a positive image associated with a personal brand it is important to have a domain name that is able to bring all three of these parts together to deliver one meaningful message. Just think of the benefits of having your own personal brand associated with a well known and successful domain name! With an online business that have a highly premium domain name can be leveraged to get jobs, network with people, acquire customers and clientes or fulfill any other derisable goal. By having a domain name associated with these three intangible assets, personal brand can be leveraged to achieve any purpose.

The Owner of the book knows how to leverage a domain name to improve personal brand recognition. Michael is not only the successful brand strategist behind SuccessManifesto.com but he also co-founded PrincetonWebSolutions.com when he was only sixteen years old. The company later went on to become the #1 youth-run web development company in the nation in the year 2000. Michael credits much of his personal brand building success to his carefully planned domains strategy.

Michael’s latest domain name strategy involves the launch of SuccessManifesto.com, a domain name and web site that prominently displays his personal brand as the main theme. The site features his own image, personal achievements, and an online journal that helps bridge the gap between him and his inspired readers. The domain name and web site also serves the purpose of helping him gain credibility with young people and giving them access to his new book The Student Success Manifesto.

Another interesting brand strategy Michael has implemented with his domain name and web site is his ability to blend his company brand with his own personal brand. After visiting SuccessManifesto.com, visitors come away with the perception that Michael Simmons, the person, displays the same characteristics and values that the Extreme Entrepreneurship Education Corporation, his company, holds.

Whether he is starting a new business or promoting a book, Michael has always demonstrated an ability to use a highly brand-able, trusted and persuasive domain name as part of his strategy. This method has been used to build credibility with his target market. His innovative approach of using a domains for his personal brand building through SuccessManifesto.com gives Michael a clear and competitive advantage over other individuals who do not have a domain name or are only using conventional means to build their personal brand. To date, using a domain names as the foundation to build one’s own brand can still be considered an unconventional route. The good news is that only success and growth have come to individuals who have chosen this less traveled path towards personal brand building.

Guidelines for Choosing a Hosting Plan

Posted by admin on June 11th, 2009 filed in Domain Name Articles

So you think you want to start up a website.  In prior posts I discussed choosing a domain name and creation of web pages.  Which brings the subject of hosting into play:  Early on in your decision making process, you will want to shop for a hosting plan.

Once you have created the pages for your website, now you want to publish it to the internet.  To have your website seen on the internet you will need to choose a hosting plan.  A hosting plan is different from a domain name.  You own your domain name but you rent a hosting plan.  With a hosting plan you will be paying a service provider to publish your website on the internet for all to see.  Let’s go over some of the key important factors to consider when choosing a hosting plan:

SERVICE  First and foremost in your decision is to consider the hosting provider’s reputation for it’s services.  It does not matter that a multitude of features are offered or if the price is low if the service you will be getting with your hosting plan is sub par or even worse, nonexistent.  After you have published, or “gone live” on the internet, the last thing you want is for the website to go down and become unavailable to potential customers.  Therefore should a problem occur it is important to select a hosting provider that is readily available and will resolve the issue in as timely a manner as possible.

UPTIME  When shopping for a hosting company, find out if they have an uptime guarantee. The better hosting providers will offer up to 99% uptime.  That sounds great, but it does mean that your site could go down for 1% of the time, which means over 7 hours out of each month! The best hosting providers will have a track record of up to 99.9% uptime, which essentially guarantees you that downtime is negligible or even non-existent.

SIZE  How large will the website be?  Most hosting providers set the pricing on their hosting plans according to the space taken up on their servers by the website.  If your website will be media rich with videos or music or photo files, or a large e-commerce site with a lot of catalogue pages, you will have to take space into consideration as a criteria for choosing the right hosting plan.

LINUX OR WINDOWS  Which operating system should your hosting plan use?  BTW it does not matter what operating system you are using on your personal computer.  The determining factor here is what programming language was used to design the website.  For example, if CGI or PHP programming language was used, the best choice for the hosting operating system would be Linux.  For a website designed with ASP, the best choice would be Windows.  Note that if you are simply publishing a basic html website, the choice of hosting Operating system won’t really matter as much until you get into more advanced languages such as PHP or ASP.

TRAFFIC  Will you be expecting lots of visitors to your website?  Hosting plans are usually sold at different level plans according to the bandwith that will be required.  Bandwidth = Traffic.  Obviously more bandwidth is better because it allows more visitors to visit your site, but at the beginning this will be hard for you to gauge.  Usually the best way to proceed here is to start with a basic low bandwidth plan, and upgrade later as the traffic begins to flow to the website.

SHARED OR DEDICATED HOSTING  Whether or not to choose shared hosting over dedicated hosting comes down to the following:  A shared hosting plan is exactly as it sounds, and means that your website will be stored on a server along with lots of other websites.  In this hosting format you generally have no ability to make changes to the resident software on the system, meaning you cannot change or upgrade the operating system, or the database management system, etc.  You will have to work within the software structure provided by the hosting company.  Dedicated or virtual dedicated hosting is different in the sense that you will have full control over the environment that your website resides in, and you will have the only access to that space.  Dedicated server hosting gives you full control over setup of the operating system and auxilliary programs such as database management or shopping cart or database management software.  This type of hosting is definitely geared to the more advanced user, and usually you won’t be able to get as much customer support because it will be a custom setup.  The best advice I can give to the newbie is to use shared hosting at first, until you gain more experience and abilities and are ready to take the plunge into something as advanced as dedicated hosting.
